Shreyas Iyer's omission from the 2025 Asia Cup is still a hot topic, and Mohammed Shami openly demanded transparency—speak to him if they don't like him. Shami has been battling several injury issues and has been away from the international troop for quite a long time. He toured with the Indian team that played the England series in February-March this year. However, after that he wasn't selected, indicating that he might not be playing either of the formats. Recently Shami spoke to News24, where he asked if he has really been a hurdle to anyone's life that he needs to retire. He said, “If someone has a problem, tell me. Whose life will become better if I take retirement? Mai kiski zindagi mein patthar bana hua hu ki tumhe mujhse retirement chahiye? (Tell me whose life have I become a stone that you want me to retire?) The day I get bored, I will leave. You don’t pick me, don’t play me, I don’t care. But I will keep working hard. You don’t pick me in international, I will play domestic. I will keep playing somewhere or the other. Retirement and such decisions are made when you start feeling bored, when you don’t want to wake up at 7 am for a Test. That is not the time for me now. I’ll be up at 5 if you want me to." Shami on injury and rehab Shami shared that he has been working on his weight and has been sharpening his bowling skills. He has been training with his workload but is in no mood to push beyond his limits. He said, "Touchwood, it is better now. For the last two months I have trained, increased my skills, shed weight and increased the load as well. Let's see the result that I get now. My focus is on getting rhythm and being able to bowl long spells. I have practiced batting and fielding as well and done a lot of gym. Everything is comfortable now." He adds, "We often overpush, and then we have to pay a big penalty. It happened to me during the 2015 World Cup when I pushed a lot and then had to get my knee operated on. It was the same scene in 2023. I played in pain and then I had to give up and spent a lot of time after that. I am not saying not to push, but if it is a normal series, you should talk to the management." He stood out as one of the best pacers for the Indian side alongside Jasprit Bumrah. Even though he has no grudge against the selectors for not choosing him, he still aims for the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, he feels that he is still fit for any format and can even play the Duleep Trophy that started today. He said, "I don't blame anyone for non-selection or complain about it. If I'm right for the team, select me; if I'm not, then I have no issues with it. Selectors have the responsibility to do what's best for Team India. I have a belief in my abilities that if and when I'm granted an opportunity, I'll give my best. I'm working hard." He added, "Right now, I don't have any hope (about my international return). If they play me, I'll try to perform and give my 100 percent. Whether they play me or not, that's not in my hands. If I'm playing the Duleep Trophy, five-day cricket, I'm available for all formats. I was called to Bengaluru, and I have cleared the fitness test (Bronco), and now I’m ready to go back."
