The first Test between Australia and the West Indies at Bridgetown has raised questions regarding umpiring and the West Indian head coach, Darren Sammy, has reportedly visited the match referee, Jagaval Srinath, to express his concerns after Day 2's play. There were at reasons that sparked the controversy. The first one was related to WI captain Roston Chase's dismissal. It happened when Pat Cummins ball slid in between the bat and pad. The on-field umpire declared him out, and Chase went for the review. Apparently, the ball looked to hit the pad first and then deflected to the pad again after getting a slightly inside edge. As Chase was given a lbw, it raised eyebrows. Bat first or pad first? 🤔Roston Chase given OUT… but UltraEdge had a spike.Should that have been given out?#WIvsAUS pic.twitter.com/DaitLZhXPm — FanCode (@FanCode) June 26, 2025 The second one came when Travis Head got a life when he was in his late 40s. Head swirled the bat off a wideish ball from Shamar Joseph and the keeper, Shai Hope, took a low catch. When the ball looked like it had landed at the tip of Hope's fingers, the third umpire thought it had dropped on the ground. Caught or did the ball touch the ground? 🫣Windies are furious with that decision. Sammy fears partiality against hosts After Day 2's play, Sammi expressed his concerns that the West Indies might be cornered because mistakes can't happen repeatedly. Speaking to ESPN, he said, "We are just trying to find some sort of understanding as to what the process is. We only hope for consistency. That's all we could ask for. When there is doubt in something, just be consistent across the board." He added, "I have noticed, especially with this particular umpire, it's something that, for me, started in England. It's frustrating. I just ask for consistency in the decision-making." However, if Darren Sammy has lodged a complaint or if the ICC will take any step to or consider sanctions is yet to be seen.
