Seems the experiment of pushing Sam Curran up the order hasn't really worked out for Chennai Super Kings. The move was made by skipper MS Dhoni in 2020 while batting against Rajasthan Royals. Curran went at it quickly and hit some runs, scoring a useful 17 runs from just 6 balls. In the year 2024, with Rachin Ravindra out of the equation, Dhoni turned to Curran once again-this time at number 3-after Mohammed Shami had thrown the first ball of the match at Chepauk in the dismissal of Shaik Rasheed. This time, Curran was not called upon for a pinch hit. There was some movement on the pitch, and the SRH pacers were right on the money. Curran looked to settle in initially and recently tried to shift gears and accelerate the innings, but nothing went according to plan for him. He was very slow; he managed just 9 runs from 10 balls. Given his lack of match practice and the tough track at Chepauk, such an outcome seemed to be on the cards. The move was symptomatic of CSK's confused thinking. Why sit Brevis on the bench just to send Curran and Jadeja ahead of him?
