The Punjab Kings captain, Shreyas Iyer, has recently been one of the most hyped cricketers in the Indian circuit, something he became after years of playing silently. He led Delhi Capitals, his first team, to the playoffs in 2019, 2020 and in 2021. 2020 was the year when DC played their first final; however, they lost to the Mumbai Indians, despite twin half centuries from Shreyas and Rishabh Pant. Shreyas joined KKR in 2022; however, he could not manage a satisfying result. He was 23 years and 142 days old when he got his captaincy for the Delhi Daredevils, playing his first match as captain against KKR. Not only that, he is still the youngest captain to ever lead an IPL team. He achieved that in 2020, while leading DC against MI. He was 25 years and 164 days old. Representing DD, he scored 93* off 40 balls, for which he was awarded the player of the match. DD won that match by 55 runs, after posting their season's best 219 runs. In 2018, he captained 8 matches and had won four of those. For KKR, he played his first match against CSK, and had won the match by 6 wickets. Shreyas stood unbeaten at 20, hitting the winning boundary. Umesh Yadav was named Player of the Match for his bowling performance (2 wickets for 20 runs). For Punjab Kings, he had his opening match against Gujarat Titans at Ahmedabad. There he scored his career-best 97* (42 balls) and was awarded the Player of the Match as PBKS won by 11 runs. 5 | Second only captain to attend auction Shreyas Iyer became only the second active IPL captain to sit at the auction table, marking a rare leadership moment in league history. The trend began in December 2023, when Rishabh Pant attended the IPL 2024 mini-auction in Dubai. Representing Delhi Capitals, Pant became the first reigning captain to be present during bidding. The appearance was significant, as it came after his long recovery from a serious car accident. He worked closely with Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly during the process. Two years later, the baton passed to Shreyas Iyer. On December 16, 2025, Iyer attended the IPL 2026 mini-auction in Abu Dhabi as Punjab Kings’ captain.
