History and emotion merged as Suhail Sattar of Timor-Leste and his 17-year-old son Yahya Suhail became the first-ever father-son duo to play in the same international cricket match. This was during Timor-Leste's first-ever international fixture against hosts Indonesia in Bali on November 6. The remarkable feature of the match was the appearance of 50-year-old Suhail and Yahya in the same match, batting together, which was a rare and emotional moment for the fans of the game worldwide. This feat forms a unique chapter in the history of the game as Timor-Leste begins its sojourn in international cricket. Not the First Family Pair in International Cricket This feat by the Suhail combination is a first in men’s international cricket, but not the first such instance of a parent and child playing together at the international level. As early as this year, Switzerland’s women’s team featured a mother-daughter duo in Metty Fernandes and Naina Metty Saju, who played six T20Is together to set a similar benchmark in women’s cricket. In the history of domestic cricket in general, there have been other memorable father-son combinations. Legendary West Indies batter Shivnarine Chanderpaul and his son Tagenarine have played 11 first-class games together for Guyana. At one point, Shivnarine also led his son during their 2014 match against Windward Islands at Providence Stadium. More recently, Afghanistan's veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi played against his son, Hassan Eisakhil, in the final of the 2025 Shpageeza Cricket League, another emotional family clash in the sport. Tough Beginning for Timor-Leste It has been a difficult beginning for Timor-Leste in international cricket, despite the historic moment. They suffered three initial matches-by lopsided ten wickets-thus assuredly giving them a few dear years to acquire experience and confidence before stepping onto the world's grandest stage. Again, it's what inspires the story of the the father-son duo: cricket becomes a bridge between generations and creates memories instead of forgettable moments. Milestones of this nature instill both pride and hope for the future among young cricketing nations like Timor-Leste.
