Anil Agarwal, the Chairman of Vedanta Resources Limited, has been a strong proponent of a Bihar based Indian Premier League franchise. In an emotional post on social media the billionaire businessman asserted that the state definitely deserves an IPL team of its own having churned out numerous fine cricketers in the past. Currently, the IPL has 10 franchises in it and the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants are the most recent entries having been inducted prior to the 2022 season. There is currently no IPL team that is named after the Indian state of Bihar. Agarwal drew parallels from the career trajectories of youngsters like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ishan Kishan and asked why Bihar as a state has never got its due in the Indian cricket landscape. Anil Agarwal Lauded Bihar's Cricketing Pedigree In his message the businessman acknowledged the cricketing talent that has emerged from the state over the years and stated that Bihar has always contributed to the Indian team's contingent in a huge manner. He wrote: “Don't you think Bihar deserves an unparalleled team of its own, just like Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders? The soil of Bihar has given the country many exceptional cricketers." He subsequently highlighted the prowess of Ishan Kishan from Patna, the owner of the record for the fastest double century in the ODI format in terms of balls faced and the emergence of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from Samastipur, one of the youngest to ever make his IPL debut. The businessman further acknowledged the potential of Sakib Hussain, the young fast bowler from Gopalganj and his recent exploit. He said: "It has always been my dream and endeavor to ensure that the youth of Bihar get full opportunities to excel in every field." While IPL was expanded from eight to ten franchisees in 2022, there is no concrete discussion about introducing new franchises in the immediate future. However, previously, IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal has suggested that the league could be transformed from 74 matches to 94 games by 2028. This could allow for the return of the home and away full format of the tournament to the IPL which could bring up new chances for new franchisees to make its way in the IPL in 2028. This notion has once again revived discussions amongst the fans whether Bihar may get its very own franchise of IPL in due course of time.
