The 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series will always hold a special place in Indian cricket history. After India’s shocking collapse for just 36 runs in the Adelaide Test, Ajinkya Rahane stepped up, leading a remarkable comeback that turned the series around. In the third Test in Sydney, Ashwin made a crucial impact with the bat alongside Hanuma Vihari. During their match-saving partnership for India, Paine tried to break Ashwin's resilience with some sledging. According to Paine, his comments were meant to unsettle Ashwin, who had been consistently troubling him at the crease and, as Paine put it, “getting on his nerves.” This memorable face-off took place during the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Paine’s taunt to Ashwin was: “I can’t wait to get you to the Gabba, Ash, we’ll see you there, huh?” Unbothered by Paine's remarks, Ashwin replied calmly by saying: “Just like we want to get you to India; that will be your last series.” Can’t wait to get you to the Gabba Ash pic.twitter.com/Dzb2P2vi2R — The Grade Cricketer (@gradecricketer) October 29, 2024 In a recent conversation with The Grade Cricketer, Paine said: "No, I don't because to this day Ashwin didn't play in that (Brisbane) Test match. I wasn't talking to the Indians, I was talking to him. I said we cannot wait to get you to the Gabba. Because he was annoying us, fair to say. He is a fantastic cricketer. He was getting me out all the time and that was annoying me as well." Paine also raised doubts about the legitimacy of Ashwin's reported back spasms, which prevented him from playing in the crucial Brisbane Test. He further said: “It was directed straight at him, and he pulled out of that Test. Did I have a great game? No, but I showed up. On day one, he was jogging laps; those back spasms couldn’t have been that bad.”
