Former Australian Test captain Tim Paine has backed Marnus Labuschagne despite struggling with the form. Paine said that he does not think any youngster is ready to face the peak Jasprit Bumrah. Labuschagne has been struggling with his form and has an average of 13.66 in his last Test innings. Many former Australian cricketers have voiced to drop Marnus from the squad. Even Mitchell Johnson, in a previously published article, urged the team to bench Marnus for the Adelaide Test. He had urged to play Marnus in the domestics so that he could gain some confidence before coming back to the national side. However, Paine backed Marnus, may be running out of options or out of utmost faith. Prior to the second Test at Adelaide, on SEN Breakfast, Paine said, “I certainly would have (picked him for Adelaide) and I’d be backing him again next Test as well. There are a few reasons why, one is he’s got some credits in the bank, that’s first and foremost. You don’t get to the averaging 48 in Test cricket, even after a horror run recently without (being a good player)." Added, Paine is not aware of the available options. Also, he feels that the pink-ball Test may favour Manus Labuschagne. He said, "I think it actually works in Marnus’ favour that this is a pink ball Test. He almost gets a bit of a free hit because batting can be extremely difficult and they’d be unlikely to drop someone after a pink ball Test. So, there’s a couple of things in his favour." On Day 1 of the pink ball Test at Adelaide, India is struggling with the bat as they lost 6 wickets but thankfully has crossed 100 runs. The team looked steady after a golden duck of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the very first ball of the inning, off Mitchell Starc. However, with the departure of KL Rahul, India lost wickets within minutes.
