Indian batter Tilak Varma is to play for Hampshire in the current County season. The 22-year-old, who has represented India in four ODIs and 25 T20Is to date, has been invited by Hampshire to contest in the County Championship Division One tournament, as per a press release made public by the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) on Wednesday, June 11. Strikingly, Varma's previous appearance in a red-ball competition was for India A under Mayank Agarwal against India C in the Duleep Trophy at Anantapur between September 19 to 22 in 2024. Here is what HCA said in a release “The Hyderabad Cricket Association is happy to inform that Hyderabad International player Mr. N Thakur Tilak Varma has been approached by the team Hampshire County to play in the UK County Championship League. The Hyderabad Cricket Association wishes him a great stint with Hampshire County," Varma, who was seen last playing for Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025, has played 18 first-class games till now, scoring a total of 1204 runs with the support of five centuries and four half-centuries. The left-hander averages 50.16 in the red-ball game. Apart from being a gun fielder, Varma is a useful off-spinner, taking eight wickets at an average of 12.87 and strike rate of 24.10. The Southampton based side were crushed by nine wickets by table leaders Sussex in their last game, which was at The Rose Bowl between May 23 and 26. Ben Brown's Hampshire next game in the red-ball circuit is against Essex at the County Ground in Chelmsford between June 22 and 25.
