Chennai Super Kings might have lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk Stadium on Friday, but the team had a lot of positives to take from, one of them being Ayush Mhatre. Ayush Mhatre’s impressive rise continued as the 17-year-old opener shone in his first home appearance for Chennai Super Kings. Facing Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mhatre scored a brisk 30 off 19, providing CSK with early momentum in a must-win encounter. Brought in as an injury replacement for captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Mhatre has quickly impressed with two quickfire cameos, first against the Mumbai Indians, then against the SRH. Mhatre's entry into the IPL came after a breakout domestic season where he smashed 458 runs in seven innings for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, including two centuries at a strike rate of 135. On commentary duty for JioHotstar, Suresh Raina couldn’t hide his admiration for the youngster. He compared Mhatre’s technique to Virender Sehwag’s, pointing out how balanced and fearless the youngster looked at the crease. His natural strokeplay has already earned praise across the board. The young batter's consistent domestic form for Mumbai, including 458 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, fast-tracked his entry into the IPL. During the broadcast on JioHotstar, CSK legend Suresh Raina took note of the youngster’s confident strokeplay, drawing comparisons to Indian great Virender Sehwag. “Look at his feet, look at his head position. I remember Viru bhai (Virender Sehwag) had a very similar setup, where his head used to be very good,” Raina said on air. ‘Try out Mhatre, you will get absolutely loyal and royal batting’: Raina Raina, who has often spoken highly of Mumbai’s domestic talent, pointed to the kind of company Mhatre keeps in the dressing room. Having played alongside Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer, and receiving praise from Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma, Mhatre has already made an impression on some of India’s best. “Suryakumar Yadav appreciated him when he made runs at the Wankhede Stadium, then Rohit Sharma also spoke to him after that,” Raina revealed, referring to a viral clip of Rohit congratulating Mhatre post-match. Raina also pointed out how Mhatre will be playing for CSK for the next ten years. “This player is going to play for at least 10 years for CSK. He showed us in the last match, try out Mhatre, you will get absolutely loyal and royal batting,” Raina concluded. Although CSK lost early wickets in that game, Mhatre’s assured presence at the top was a positive takeaway in what has otherwise been a tough season for the five-time champions.
