MS Dhoni believes that taking tough calls and making key selection changes helped Chennai Super Kings field a more effective bowling attack in their win over Lucknow Super Giants on Monday. After enduring five consecutive losses, CSK finally picked up their second win of the IPL 2025 season. However, the victory wasn’t as straightforward as it might have seemed. In a bold move that surprised many fans, the team decided to leave out veteran all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin to accommodate an extra pacer in the lineup. "We were actually putting too much pressure on Ash, he has bowled two overs on wickets that were not doing a lot, and the batsmen were just expressing themselves," Dhoni said during the post-match presentation. The CSK skipper further noted that including another pace option gave the team more flexibility with the ball, particularly in the powerplay overs. "We made a few changes where we could have more bowlers who could bowl in the first six and, if needed - if the fast bowlers, somebody goes for runs - we have Noor [Ahmad], who can drop in with one over," he said. ‘I feel this looks like a better attack’ Dhoni praised the revamped bowling unit for their performance against Lucknow, who were restricted to 166/7 on Monday. "I feel this looks like a better attack, there's more manoeuvrability for the captain. I feel, as a bowling unit we have done well," he said. However, Dhoni admitted that the batting still has room for improvement. "As a batting unit, I think we can do even better," he added. Despite the much-needed win, CSK remain at the bottom of the table. With seven games left, they will need to win almost all of them to stay in contention for the playoffs. Their next challenge will be a high-pressure encounter against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians on Sunday, April 20.
