After Chennai Super Kings suffered a heavy defeat against Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2025 clash, former players turned commentators had sharp words for the franchise’s current situation. MI crushed their arch-rivals by nine wickets on Sunday, reducing CSK's chances of making it to the play-offs. As CSK find themselves at the bottom of the table with two wins and six losses, commentators didn't hold back from criticising the team's outdated strategies to poor team selections. During the commentary, former Indian batter Sadagopan Ramesh said that CSK are still playing with the old template. "CSK are playing with the old template. They are still thinking that 180 is a winning score. While other teams have moved on from that and have started scoring 200-plus, CSK is stuck with this mindset," he said. Ramesh's concerns stem from CSK's inability to adapt to modern T20 trends. While most sides have embraced high-risk batting and deeper lineups to consistently push beyond 200, CSK's more conservative approach has come under fire, especially in high-scoring venues like Wankhede, where they struggled to keep pace. Against MI, the team managed only 176/5, which MI chased down within 16 overs. He minced no words while speaking from the commentary box. "As an ex-CSK player, I'm telling you this is the worst ever CSK team I have seen in 18 years. The retained players and also the players they have picked in the auction, both aren't working. Nobody is trying to hit sixes here. You cannot win matches if you don't hit sixes right from the start. This has been a recurring issue now," he said. Adding to the criticism was Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who expressed disbelief at some of the player selections. "I don't understand some of the picks in the team. I don't know what's Tripathi doing here. I have no idea what Vijay Shankar's role in the team. Whether he is a batter or a fielder or a bowler," he said. CSK will now have to win all their remaining matches to stay in contention for the play-offs. They will return to action on April 25, where they will host Sunrisers Hyderabad.
