The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee have announced the white-ball squad for the upcoming Australia series, and the notable change was the removal of Rohit Sharma from the ODI captaincy. Shubman Gill is set to captain the ODI side in the upcoming Australia series. However, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are included in the ODI squad, but it has been speculated that this could be their last ODI series going forward. If they want to play ODI cricket in future, then they must be playing domestic cricket in order to be eligible for selection. Former Indian cricketer turned commentator, Irfan Pathan, now shared that the future of both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma looks bleak. Their spot for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027 is still uncertain. Pathan suggested that both players should regularly participate in domestic cricket to remain in contention because fitness is not going to be the only criterion for selection in the future. On his YouTube video, Irfan Pathan said: “Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli want to play the 2027 World Cup, but match fitness will be a big challenge for them. Rohit has worked well on his fitness. He is focused on that. But there is regular fitness and match-time fitness. If you are not playing regular cricket, both of them have to ensure some game time.” Also Read: How many ODIs will India play before the 2027 ODI World Cup? Pathan further added that it is very important for both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to remain competitive and ensure that their 2027 World Cup dreams stay alive. He also pointed out that numbers won’t save their place in the team if they are not serious about domestic cricket. Pathan further added: "Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have to play domestic cricket. They are big players and know what to do. They have all the experience in the world. But they are not even playing T20Is, so there will be big gaps between the few matches that they play before the big World Cup. They will need regular game time to be fit for that. Only then will their dream to play in the 2027 World Cup come true.” These two Indian greats will be in action against Australia in the three-match ODI series starting from October 19 in Perth.
