South African legend Allan Donald compared Dewald Brevis with AB de Villiers but insisted that the young sensation has to be viewed as his own player. Brevis has been creating waves in international cricket with his powerful batting. In a recent encounter, the 22-year-old crushed a stunning 125 runs from only 56 balls against Australia and illustrated why he is among the greatest young prospects in the sport. Though having played only 11 T20Is till now, Brevis has already emerged as a crucial member of South Africa's T20I team. He has 341 runs at a strike rate of 193.75 and an average of 37.88 with a century and a fifty. The fans also refer to him as "Baby AB" due to the similarity in his batting style and stroke-making with AB de Villiers. Donald, though, feels that although the comparison is inevitable, Brevis must not be overshadowed by de Villiers' legacy. To India Today, Donald told: "He’s very close to AB de Villiers and has been coached by him, so naturally, there are similarities. But a lot of people say you can’t compare Dewald Brevis to AB, and that’s true. What AB achieved can only ever belong to him. But this kid has the talent to win games from nowhere." Donald added that Brevis has proved his ability both in local cricket and now at the global level. "He has already shown it domestically and now on the biggest stage, scoring a hundred against a top-quality Australian side. His talent and execution are undeniable." Record SA20 Deal for 'Baby AB' Brevis also made waves in the SA20 2026 auction, becoming the costliest player in the league's history after Pretoria Capitals purchased him for a record R16.5 million. Donald opines that Brevis possesses the potential to become one of the white-ball greats. “Of course, there will only ever be one AB. But Brevis mirrors his mannerisms so closely that it almost feels like watching a clone. Why not have a hero like AB to inspire you? Brevis can do things most batters can’t. He’s that kind of player. As the years go on, we’ll see how he develops across formats… he has the potential to become an absolute superstar.” Brevis also had a great IPL 2025 season with CSK, scoring 225 runs off six matches at a strike rate of 180, including a couple of match-winning innings. Brevis is now participating in the three-match T20I series against England, where South Africa is leading 1-0. He made 23 runs in the opening game and will be in action again in the second game in Old Trafford on September 12. With his attacking style, hitting prowess, and increasing maturity, Dewald Brevis is poised to bear the burden of South African cricket for years to come.
