Cricketer-turned-commentator David Lloyd said Shubman Gill’s rise in India’s Test team after Virat Kohli’s retirement is smooth, just like a new King taking the throne after the old one. He also praised Rishabh Pant, saying he is leading the team forward after MS Dhoni, and that it proves that great players can be replaced, even if it seems impossible at first. Lloyd made these observations after India had a dominant fourth day at Edgbaston during the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Gill had a furious 161-run knock, scoring nearly a run a ball. He became the first player in history to score both 200 and 150 in a single Test match. Pant also contributed swift runs with his 65 off 58 balls, consisting of eight boundaries and three sixes. They contributed together to India's massive score of 608 runs. In his column for the Daily Mail, Lloyd wrote: “People say world-class players are irreplaceable, but are they? This is a real case of ‘The King is dead, long live the King.’ Shubman Gill has taken over seamlessly from one of the greatest modern batsmen in Virat Kohli and in style too. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant is always box office and has taken India to the next level after MS Dhoni. High praise indeed, for both." Pant has already surpassed Dhoni when it comes to performance and is now regarded by many as India's greatest wicketkeeper of all time. Gill, on the other hand, is helping India forget their worries about who would bat at number four after Kohli’s retirement in May. He has already scored 585 runs in just four innings on this tour, only eight runs short of Kohli’s highest total in a series in England. Lloyd also criticized one of the Indian team's decisions. He wondered if they would regret not selecting Kuldeep Yadav and opting for Washington Sundar instead. England is still 536 runs behind to win with seven wickets remaining. The pitch is still bating-friendly, so India will need to labor hard with the ball to secure the remaining wickets. Llyod said: “I had a message from none other than Farokh Engineer questioning why Kuldeep Yadav is not playing. Well, I agree Mr Engineer. On the last day, India may well be crying out for some wrist spin. This is when they need Yadav but in fairness, Siraj and Akash Deep have bowled really well on a surface that hasn’t offered much. India went with the conservative selection of Washington Sundar but will they come to regret not having Yadav on a day five pitch?"
