Just less than 16 months after the tragic loss in the 2023 World Cup final, India find themsleves in the final of another ODI tournament, hoping for a different result this time. India and New Zealand will be clashing for the title of ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday in Dubai. While India have headed into the final remaining undefeated throughout the tournament, New Zealand lost their group stage match against India at the same venue. Flashbacks of the Past Just like the 2023 World Cup, India have had an absolutely flawless run in the entire tournament with their best and senior-most players stepping up at the perfect moments. Be it chasing tricky targets or defending a low total, India have been ticking all the boxes with superb efforts. However, the results of the recent ICC ODI tournaments have been nothing but heartbreaking for the Indian team and its fans. A defeat in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy Final against their arch rivals Pakistan was followed by a semi- final loss in the 2019 World Cup against the same Kiwis and then the famous home defeat of '23 World Cup Final in front of a jam packed crowd of more than one lakh fans in Ahmedabad by the hands of the Aussies. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rohit Sharma (@rohitsharma45) One Final Push There is no doubt in the fact that this would be the last ICC tournament together for greats like Virat Kohli, skipper Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja and Md. Shami as the former three have already retired from T20Is and India haven't made it to the World Test Championship Final this year. The team's performance in the last ODI World Cup was so good that people had started to believe that India were destined to win it, until... they couldn't. That final in Narendra Modi Stadium left a deep scar in every Indian fans heart, knowing that their two heroes- Kohli and Rohit will end their careers without lifting that trophy together. They did go on to win the T20 World Cup after that in the past year and here we are- the cricket gods have once again given them a shot to take at a worthy prize. It's almost the same team, the best that any fan could ask for and they have been playing their best cricket, covering almost every base. From blistering starts at the top, Kohli's consistent magic with the bat, a stable middle order, three top quality all rounders taking up their responsibility and some great bowling, especially from Varun Chakravarthy who was included in the squad at the last moment. A lot of these current stars had just started their quest for greatness back then but as they'll step onto the field this Sunday, they will be reminded of how far they have come from that night of never ending celebrations in Birmingham and ended up becoming the best players of the format, now heading towards the end of their respective careers. India's team of 2023-present is hailed as one of the most dominant and phenomenal sides in one day cricket but hasn't been able to win that silverware yet. They have to do it this time, otherwise decades later, this marvelous side might just find itself lost somewhere in the history books. Kohli and Rohit would be itching to get their hands on that trophy, ending the 12 year wait after they missed out on the opportunity in 2017. The Final Frontier of NZ The Kiwis have given quite a difficult and traumatic time to team India and its fans in the last five years or so. No one needs to remind Indians of MS Dhoni's runout in the semi final of 2019. Everyone remembers that moment and how New Zealand denied India's one of the best sides a World Cup. Going forward, NZ then went on to defeat India's greatest test squad in the WTC Final in 2021. Later that year they knocked India out of the T20 World Cup from the group stage itself. And most recently, they just handed India a 3-0 whitewash in tests at their own home. New Zealand has definitely been a huge headache for the Indian team management but they need to keep in mind that it was India with the upper hand a few days back in the group stage and also in the 2023 semi final where they defeated them quite comfortably. If India keeps out the likes of Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry and Kane Williamson, we might just see history being written in golden letters for Indian cricket and its superstars on Sunday.
