The Rajasthan Royals captain, aka the T20I opener for the Indian team, Sanju Samson, has opened up about how the Indian T20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, and head coach, Gautam Gambhir, backed him despite inconsistency in international cricket. Samson has recently attended a talk show with the former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, where he shared several issues, of which Gambhir backing him is one. It was the Bangladesh Series when Suryakumar Yadav took over the T20I captaincy, with Gautam Gambhir coming in as the coach. After that, the Bangladesh and South Africa series was coming. During a Vijay Hazare Trophy match, Sky came straight to room at Andra and said that he will be opening in all seven matches no matter what. Sanju said, "So, suddenly, the change happened after the T20 World Cup. So Gautam bhai came in, and Surya came in as the captain. I was playing a Duleep Trophy game in Andhra. Surya was playing for the other team. He told me, ‘There is a good opportunity coming up for you. We have seven games lined up, and I am going to give you all seven games as an opener’.” Read also: Manish Gets Rajat Patidar’s Old Number, Police Step In Gautam Gambhir backs him Sanju Samson has been playing in the India T20I format on a regular basis since then, opening with young Abhishek Sharma. Well, his Sri Lanka tour did not go well. But after that in the Bangladesh and the South Africa series, he smashed three centuries. Recalling Gautam Gambhir's support, he said that Gambhir told him that he will only drop him if he gets 21 ducks. Sanju said, “The words coming out from the captain's mouth itself actually felt, Oh wow, great. I played two games in Sri Lanka but was unable to score runs. I was a bit down in the dressing room, and Gautam bhai came up to me and asked what had happened.” He added, “I said, 'After a long time, I got a chance, but I failed to capitalise'. He said, 'So what? I'll drop you if you register 21 ducks'. That's the word which he used. That kind of confidence from the captain and the coach has definitely raised my confidence. That really helped me to go out there and perform." Sanju Samson further accepted that there has been a change in the dressing room after Sky and Gambhir took charge. And it had brought change to his position too. Being an irregular member for the nine or ten years in international cricket, it wasn't easy for the keeper-batter. But he tries to stay positive. So far, he has played 42 T20Is scoring 861 runs. His average counts 25.32 but has a decent strike rate of 152.38.
