Jasprit Bumrah, one of the best fast bowlers of present-day cricket, has often been dragged under the microscope for his unconventional bowling style. Former cricketers and critics had often slammed questions on his bowling style before tagging him the best. Well, for Bumrah, this is not new. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Jasprit Bumrah's childhood coach, Kishore Trivedi, shared that his students were shocked watching Bumrah's action—if he was throwing the ball or is really doing a legal action! Trivedi said that he took a few days to realize that there was nothing wrong with his action. He even said that despite his odd run-up, Jasprit Bumrah had speed, and it used to terror the other kids to face him. In the interview, Trivedi said, “When Jasprit first came to the nets, he had this odd action. The boys were confused. They were asking me, ‘Is he throwing it or is this a correct action?’ They thought he was throwing it. I observed his action closely for three days. It was absolutely fine – there was nothing ‘chuck’ about it." He added, "It’s an odd action, so the boys were confused. But I was also surprised at how much speed he could generate at 16. His run-up was 10 or 12 yards, but he generated so much speed that the boys were afraid to face him because the ball was bouncing so much." Changing the line or length will be something to look after with time, but this has to be his core action, his weapon. Trivedi said, ‘You should not change your action. That is your weapon. Don’t change anything about it. You can change your line and length, where you aim the ball. But this is your original action – it’s natural. And you never change natural." A lot of kids gradually took up Bumrah's action with time. But his action comes with consequences. And Jasprit Bumrah knows it well, especially with the recurring back stress he suffers from. Unlike normal fast bowlers, he picks up the pace all of a sudden after a short and way slower run-up compared to the pacers. And this creates excess pressure on his back. Notably, several reports are suggesting that Jasprit Bumrah is likely to play the fourth Test at Old Trafford starting on July 23.
