Chennai Super Kings suffered yet another loss in IPL 2025 on Friday as they went down to Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets at Chepauk. This also marked their first-ever home loss to SRH in IPL history. After being bowled out for just 154, CSK struggled to defend the target despite favourable spin conditions later in the evening. “I think we kept losing wickets, and another thing is I felt, in the first innings, the wicket was slightly better, and 155 [154] is not a justifiable score because it wasn't turning a lot,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation. Dhoni also admitted that the five-time champions could have run better and put more runs on the board. “Yes, after the eighth, ninth, [or] tenth over, it became slightly two-paced when it comes to the fast bowlers. But nothing that was out of the ordinary. So I feel we could have run slightly better and put a few more runs on the board." Despite looking well-placed at 114 for 4 in the 13th over, CSK lost their last six wickets for just 40 runs. The defeat was their seventh in nine matches this season and leaves them anchored at the bottom of the IPL 2025 table. Dhoni admitted the wicket offered some help in the second innings, but Chennai’s total was well below par. “Yes, [in the] second innings, there was a bit of help. Our spinners, the quality is there. So they were bowling in the right areas, and they got a bit of bounce. It was stopping a bit, but yeah, we were short by 15-20 runs.” Dewald Brevis shines on debut One of the few bright spots for CSK was the performance of Dewald Brevis, who made an instant impact in his first outing of the season. Brought in as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh, the 21-year-old walked in with CSK in early trouble at 47 for 3. Where we have slightly struggled is when the spinners come in, that's the time we need to either do it by batsmanship - pick up your areas where you're scoring - or try to play the big shot once in your area. So, I feel that's where we have been lacking,” Dhoni said of Brevis. The CSK skipper acknowledged that their middle-overs batting had been a weak link throughout the season. With the spin-friendly Chepauk surface not yielding results in their favour, Dhoni stressed the importance of maximising those crucial middle overs. “We have not been able to dominate or get runs against the spinners at a good pace in the middle. So that's one area where we want to improve because middle overs are very crucial - you have to get those extra five, ten or 15 runs, especially if you get off to a good start," he said. With just four points from nine games and only one win in five home matches, CSK will be desperate to bounce back when they face Punjab Kings at Chepauk on April 30.
