Legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar has been a permanent spectator of the game, and continues to remain so, even 12 years after his international retirement. Tendulkar updates himself about the newest rules, change in playing conditions, and has a watchful eye on cricket matches across the globe, particularly those played by the Indian cricket team. In a social media interaction on Reddit, Tendulkar has stated that the Umpire's Call of the Decision Review System (DRS) must be eliminated. During an open exchange, the 52-year-old was invited for questions on his official Reddit name and a fan requested that he mention a rule from cricket that he would want to be altered. The cricketer was quick to answer that DRS, which has been used extensively with the use of heavy technology, and has had its share of fallacies. Therefore, whenever ball tracking shows umpire's call, the decision needs to be made on the sole basis of whether the trajectory indicates the ball hitting the wickets or not. Here is what Sachin said on the famous social media forum: “I would change the DRS rule on Umpire’s Call. Players have chosen to go upstairs because they were unhappy with the on-field Umpire’s Call. Hence, there should be no option to go back to that call. Just like how players have bad patches, umpires too have bad patches. Technology even when inaccurate will be consistently inaccurate,” Also Read | Duleep Trophy 2025: Schedule, Squads, Venues, Streaming Details This was not the first instance when the batting pillar had expressed his thoughts regarding the Umpire's Call verdict. In a previous discussion with West Indian great Brian Lara, Tendulkar had sided with the calls being in the interest of the fielding side in case of Leg Before Wicket (lbw) dismissals. He had appealed to the International Cricket Council to have calls in the interest of the bowlers in a batsmen's game. “One thing I don’t agree with, with the ICC, is the DRS they’ve been using for quite some time. It is the LBW decision where more than 50% of the ball must be hitting the stumps for the on-field decision to be overturned. The only reason they (the batter or the bowler) have gone upstairs is because they are unhappy with the on-field decision, so when the decision goes to the third umpire, let the technology take over; just like in tennis – it’s either in or out, there’s nothing in between,” he had said in a video chat with West Indian luminary Brian Lara. For the trivia, Sachin Tendulkar is the first player in history to be given out by the third umpire. Having made his debut in the late 1980s, the Mumbai-born man has witnessed several phases of transition, and hence, it would be interesting to notice whether ICC indeed considers his advice.
