As the India-England Test series approaches, a lot of people have made their predictions, but not many have as much weight behind them as Sachin Tendulkar's. The cricket great has predicted that the Indian team will win the series 3-1, demonstrating great faith in the existing team's capability to perform under pressure. Looking back at last tour, which finished 2-2 when India had led 2-1 before a lengthy break, Tendulkar is still optimistic the side possesses what it takes to triumph overseas. With young guns coming into their own and the strength unit gaining experience, the erstwhile India skipper feels the proportions are correct for a fruitful tour. Here is what Sachin Tendulkar said: “I think what he needs to think about is what was discussed in the dressing room – when they are planning something, are they going according to that plan and whether the decision being made is in the interests of the team – that is what he needs to think about and not about the outside world.” Tendulkar also discussed individual players and what they must concentrate on. He mentioned Shubman Gill as an important player in the batting department and encouraged him to remain focused on his own game and not get swayed by external views or criticism. In Tendulkar's opinion, keeping things simple and having belief in oneself will be the key to success for Gill. The wicketkeeper-batter has been in the limelight after a sub-par performance over the past few months, with a challenging tour of Australia and an unimpressive IPL. According to Tendulkar, Pant needs to believe in himself more and play the natural way he is a match-winner, but he also spoke of the need to adjust to match conditions, particularly when the team must bat out time or rescue a game. “But there’ll be situations where he’ll have to curb his game in the interests of the team. I know that whatever he does the rest of the time will also be in the interest of the team, but the approach might have to be different. He has to have that flexibility in his mind.” With the series having much to offer in terms of high-intensity cricket, Tendulkar's words are timely motivation for the Indian camp. His support for the team and young guns such as Gill and Pant could be the morale booster before a significant contest.
