India's captain, Suryakumar Yadav, much like his counterpart from Pakistan, Salman Agha, decided to keep everyone guessing about whether the two teams would shake hands during their T20 World Cup 2026 match on Sunday in Colombo. Suryakumar mentioned he wanted to maintain the suspense for another 24 hours. The handshake question came up twice, and each time, Suryakumar insisted that the main focus should be on the game itself. Earlier in the day, Agha shared similar sentiments, noting that both teams were focused on the match, although he did mention he hoped they would honor the spirit of cricket after the handshake controversy that arose during the 2025 Asia Cup. Here is what Suryakumar said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo: "Wait for 24 hours, no. Why are you [speculating] now? We have come here to play cricket, we'll play good cricket. We will take the call [on handshake] later. Dine well, sleep. I will break the suspense tomorrow. I just said wait for 24 hours, we will play a good game and then after the game… What is important tomorrow? The game is important,” Also Read | Watch: Lockie Ferguson breaks QdK's stumps with leg-cutter in SAvsNZ clash Suryakumar Calls for Fresh Start vs Pakistan Despite Dominant Record India has a strong track record against Pakistan in World Cups and in recent Asia Cup tournaments. In the 2025 Asia Cup, India triumphed over Pakistan three times, including in the final. Suryakumar had previously stated that he no longer viewed it as a rivalry. However, when asked on Saturday if it was easier or if there was extra pressure to maintain that edge over Pakistan, Suryakumar emphasized the need to start fresh and not get caught up in past outcomes. "You have to start from zero. What you did in the past, historically, you can't carry that to the ground because then sometimes it can lead to complacency. You might go ahead of the game. If you want to be in control and want to keep a relaxed mind, then you have to always have a fresh start. So, personally, I feel that will be a better approach for us tomorrow - to treat it as a fresh game, a normal league game we have come to play in a T20 World Cup because then you stay fresh, take good calls and stay relaxed,” said Suryakumar. The Indian captain also shared that he had been following Pakistan’s wins against the Netherlands and the USA, commending Agha’s team for their impressive performance. He acknowledged that while Pakistan might have a slight edge playing all their matches in Colombo, it wouldn’t be a significant factor. Suryakumar pointed out that India is quite familiar with the conditions at the R. Premadasa Stadium, having played there several times before. As excitement builds for the T20 World Cup 2026 showdown in Colombo, the spotlight is firmly on cricket, leaving the controversies behind. Suryakumar Yadav and Salman Agha are keeping the focus on their performances, making it clear that no matter the handshake decision, Sunday’s match will be all about skill, composure, and that fierce competitive spirit.
