Shubman Gill returned to T20I cricket in September during the 2025 T20 Asia Cup. He had not been in the thinking of national selectors for the shortest version of the game since the July 2024 T20I series against Sri Lanka. But the Punjab batter was back in the squad for the eight-team event and was also made the vice-captain. Shubman didn't have a notable campaign, where he scored a mere 127 runs from seven innings at a 21.17 average. He didn't score a half-century in the campaign. But he did build some scorching opening partnerships with Abhishek Sharma, who went on to win the Player of the Tournament title. CricBlogger reported that India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav was not so excited to see Shubman back in the roster. The campaigner felt that Shubman's orthodox batting approach did not fit the type of cricketing being played by Men in Blue since he had taken over the reins. Suryakumar Yadav reportedly consoled his reservations to head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. Also Read | Will Sanju Samson Join CSK Before IPL 2026? RR Skipper Drops Major Hint But Gambhir and the selectors pointed to the Gujarat Titans' skipper's recent form and long-term worth as a all-format player. They made the call and Shubman returned before the continental competition. They conveyed the news to Suryakumar minutes before the final team was declared and this is said to have come as a shock to the 35-year-old. In summary, Shubman Gill's comeback to T20I cricket during the 2025 Asia Cup was a combination of fortunes and challenges. Though he failed to make big scores or a half-century, his opening partnerships with Abhishek Sharma gave an inkling of his ability. Irrespective of some difference of opinion by Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman was supported by the selectors and coach Gambhir for his consistency and long-term potential as an all-format cricketer and provided another opportunity to him to showcase his skills.
