The victory of India in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 made Suryakumar Yadav the third Indian captain to win the championship trophy after MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. He achieved this achievement because he became the first player to reach this milestone at a domestic venue after India defeated New Zealand in a match at Ahmedabad stadium. The three previous tournament champions attended the stadium on Sunday when India achieved its historic victory together with Kapil Dev who had led India to its 1983 Cricket World Cup championship. Dhoni and Rohit walked onto the field to present the trophy to fans who numbered almost 100000 people before the national anthems started. The elite club of Indian captains with ICC titles was joined by Yadav who discussed his special bond with Dhoni when they spoke before the tournament. Yadav explained that he used Dhoni's advice during the tournament to maintain his composure throughout the competition. Yadav explained to Express Sports that he had conducted a pre-tournament meeting with Dhoni. The former captain demonstrated his complete confidence in the players when he explained that they would achieve special things through fear-free gameplay during the competition. Surya Said: “I had a chat with MS Dhoni before the World Cup; he told me how to approach an ICC event. He told me that we have a good team, we just have to be courageous, and we will definitely win. His reaction after the win was amazing.” The 35-year-old skipper becomes the second Indian player to win an ICC trophy on home soil after Dhoni. Both Kapil Dev and Rohit Sharma lifted their respective titles outside India. The only captain who possessed complete knowledge about Yadav's World Cup leadership challenges at home was Dhoni. The Indian captain started the tournament with strong performance by scoring 84 runs without getting out in 49 balls against the United States national cricket team. His batting performance enabled India to progress from a dangerous 77/6 situation to 161/9 scoring which safeguarded the team from facing an early match crisis. Also Read | IPL 2026 in Doubt!
