India’s T20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, has been declared fit for the 2025 Asia Cup. The 34-year-old cleared the rigorous assessment at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru earlier this week. This development comes before the selection committee convenes on August 19 in Mumbai to finalize the squad for the continental T20 tournament starting September 10. Yadav had undergone surgery for a lower abdomen hernia in Germany this June. The rehabilitation was monitored closely at the CoE, where he stayed until a few days ago. The Indian Express quoted a BCCI official stating, “He has cleared his fitness and will be available to captain the Indian team during the Asia Cup. He was at the CoE till a few days ago, where he underwent a rehab programme and has now been declared fit. He will be attending the Indian team selection meeting.” The meeting will also see chief selector Ajit Agarkar present. Multiple critical calls, including leadership plans and squad balance, are expected during the session. A sports hernia required surgical intervention in 2024, and an ankle procedure preceded that. This time, after IPL 2025, he consulted specialists in the United Kingdom before opting for surgery. Despite these setbacks, his availability is crucial, as India seeks stability in its T20 setup. India opens its Asia Cup campaign on September 10 against the UAE. The event holds added significance with the ICC T20 World Cup on the horizon. Currently ranked sixth in T20I batting globally, Yadav remains India’s pivotal figure in the shortest format. Meanwhile, discussions about vice-captaincy persist. Axar Patel, aged 31, is the current deputy, but Shubman Gill’s rise in leadership roles across formats has intensified debate. Reports suggest a possible shift, though the final decision rests with selectors. For now, the confirmation of Suryakumar Yadav’s fitness is a major boost as India gears up to defend its title in September.
