In the last couple of years, the emergence of associate cricket nations has been one of the most hotly debated issues. They have proven that they can take on the big guns on the big stage, more often than not. In the recent 20 overs Cricket T20 World cup, Italy surprised many by running close with England and later beating Nepal by 10 wickets. In the last edition, USA stunned Pakistan in the group stage and made it to the super 8's. Even in the 2026 edition, the USA provided an interesting challenge to India before Suryakumar Yadav made India win. With our teams are becoming stronger and stronger in the last periods, many of high level players are searching for a new opportunity in "associate nations". Moises Henriques Might Be Moving to Portugal There could be great news coming for Portugal cricket if a new interview is anything to go by. Someone from Big Bash League will be representing Portugal if Portugal player Siraj Ullah Khadem is to be believed. According to some sources it appears that Australian cricketer Moises Henriques, 39, is likely to relocate to Portugal. Seems that he might be the only international player to make such a move in the coming years. Has a very close connection to Portugal, being born in Funchal and whose father lvaro played professionally as a footballer. His family emigrated to Australia when he was only one and has since established his full cricket career based in New South Wales. However he still remains playing in the Big Bash League for the Sydney Sixers, although he has not played for Australia since 2021. With extremely stiff competition in the Australian team he had limited opportunities at international level. To date he has represented Australia in four tests, 16 ODIs and 24 T20Is. The highlight of his career so far has been his contribution of 81 runs not out against India when playing his first test in Chennai. He has accumulated 636 runs and taken 17 wickets for Australia in all. Though he did not have a long International career, he has been a very instrumental part of the Big Bash League. He has been playing for the Sydney Sixers since the inception and amassed 3324 runs. Moreover, he was also the captain of the team for two titles in 2019/20 season, 2020/21 season. He was also a member of the Sunrisers Hyderabad when David Warner played in the Indian premier league. As players like Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Marsh and James Faulkner got more opportunities in Australian side, Henriques gradually lost his place. A decision to go to Portugal may give him a new lease of life and benefit an emerging cricket nation.
