Suresh Raina, a name that has been largely associated with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), is known for his legendary contributions and impactful knocks in different Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons. He recently appeared on a podcast hosted by Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel. The former CSK batter revealed a list of players and legends in his all-time CSK XI. Raina, while following the rules (keeping the four overseas and an impact player), named a lethal lineup comprising legends. He firmed his four overseas players, who include Matthew Hayden, Albie Morkel, Michael Hussey and Doug Bollinger. He also kept Muttiah Muralitharan as an impact player. While selecting the Indian players, Raina didn’t give much thought and selected the former CSK opener Murali Vijay, in the top order or at number three; he included himself. MS Dhoni is a name no one can ignore while naming the all-time CSK XI because the team will be incomplete. While speaking to Shubhankar Mishra, Raina said: “Murali Vijay, Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey, Suresh Raina, Subramaniam Badrinath, Albie Morkel, Doug Bollinger, Shadab Jakati, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, L Balaji, Mohit Sharma. If you want an impact player, then I would keep Muralitharan Sir.” Two notable highlights from the playing XI were the addition of Shadab Jakati and the omission of their legendary all-rounder Dwayne Bravo. While justifying the role of Jakati, Raina said that he was the ‘X’ factor for the team and also contributed well to CSK’s success from 2010 to 2013. Raina further said: “I think the X-factor Shadab Jakati was; he didn’t get the recognition. He performed very well when we won in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. Whatever we qualified, he did exceptionally well.” Shadab Jakati played for CSK from 2009 to 2012, featuring in 45 matches and clinching 50 wickets at a bowling economy of just 7.75. He won two consecutive titles with the team in 2010 and 2011. Another highlight was the omission of legendary all-rounder Dwayne Bravo. It is subjective that Raina didn’t include him, but considering the contribution of the former West Indies player, he should be in the all-time XI. After playing for the Mumbai Indians from 2008 to 2010, CSK signed the services of Bravo in the 2011 auction. Bravo announced his retirement in 2022. He finished with 183 wickets, the highest wicket-taker after 15 seasons of IPL. He also scored 1560 runs at a strike rate of 129.57.
