Sunil Gavaskar once again parried the India's head coach Gautam Gambhir. He referred to how Gambhir shouted over Shreyas Iyer after KKR won the IPL the previous year. Going down the record books last night against RR, Shreyas Iyer became the first captain to take three different teams to IPL playoffs. After Punjab Kings got into the playoffs this year, Gavaskar felt the need to remind others how Shreyas Iyer was never credited for leading his team to IPL glory. Gavaskar suggested that all the credits went to Gautam Gambhir, who was then the mentor of KKR. Experts and fans have been praising Gambhir for tactically tweaking the squad to win its first title after a 10-year drought. Sunil Gavaskar stated on Star Sports: "He didn't get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It's the captain who plays a major role in what's happening in the middle and not someone sitting in the dugout. See, this year he's getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting." He also went on to suggest that no one is giving credence to the role of Punjab's head coach Ricky Ponting in their feat this season. Once again, Iyer manifested his leadership qualities by guiding Punjab into the play-offs after 11 years. He is currently the only skipper to have taken three different franchises into the IPL knockout stage. With Punjab Kings shelling out 26.5 crore for him at the mega auction, Iyer would have found himself in quite a position, especially since he entered the auctions as the reigning IPL champion. Punjab pulled bad weather to get him. Having missed IPL 2023 because of a back injury, Iyer made an extraordinary comeback by winning the title with KKR and now has taken Punjab to the play-offs for the second year running.
