Indian Test team captain Rohit Sharma will not be available for the first Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy at Perth due to personal reasons. Although there is no official notice, reports are enough for Sunil Gavaskar to voice his opinion on whether Rohit Sharma should take leave or not. Earlier, Rohit's captaincy was under the microscope after a 0-3 humiliating whitewash against New Zealand. Indian management, too, called a meeting to decide the future of the seniors, including that of the head coach, Gautam Gambhir. Amidst the chaos, the former Indian cricketer Gavaskar does not happily accept Rohit's absence in the first test. The management has decided to pass the captaincy cap to Jasprit Bumrah in his absence. However, Rohit will retain his cap as soon as he joins the team. Gavaskar has an issue with this decision too. He wants a "one-captain policy" with no shuffling in the series. In an interview with Sports Tak, he said, "We have been reading that Rohit Sharma will not play in the first Test, perhaps he will not play in the second as well. If this is the case, then I say that, right now, the Indian selection committee should say that 'if you have to rest, rest, if there are personal reasons then look at them. But if you are missing two-thirds of the matches then you should go for this tour only as a player. We will make the vice-captain the captain of this tour.'" Indian cricket is important: Sunil Gavaskar An MS Dhoni fan, Sunil Gavaskar, perhaps wishes everyone to follow in Dhoni's footsteps—leaving home for an international match even during his child's birth. In 2015, during the ODI World Cup, Dhoni chose to stay with the team, even after getting to know the birth of his daughter Ziva. Read: Simon Doull predicts Australia's strategy against Bumrah Last time, it was Virat Kohli, the then captain, who played the first infamous Test at Adelaide but left for his paternity leave, leaving the responsibilities to the vice captain Ajinkya Rahane. Even then, Sunil Gavaskar wrote a column to Mid-Day on how he was denied to meet his newborn 1975-76 season. This time, when rumors are telling that Rohit may seek paternity leave, Gavaskar opened up again. He said, "Indian cricket is the most important. I would say that if we had won the New Zealand series 3-0, it would have been a different matter. Because we have lost this series 3-0, there is a need for a captain. The captain has to unite the team. If there is no captain in the beginning, it is better to make someone else the captain." However, former Australian captain Finch sounded logical. He supported Rohit's decision to stay back with his wife if it is actually a paternal leave. To ESPNcricinfo, he said, "I disagree with Sunny on that totally. Rohit Sharma is the captain of the Indian cricket team. If you need to stay at home because your wife is having a baby... that's such a beautiful moment... and you take all the time that you need in that regard." Notably, Jasprit Bumrah was the 36th Test captain for India, captaining the one-off Test match against England scheduled from July 1 to 5. England won the test by 7 wickets.
