In a major move to expand its global sports portfolio, Chennai-based Sun TV Network Ltd has acquired Northern Superchargers, a franchise in the ECB’s The Hundred league, for a staggering £100.5 million (₹1,161 crore approx.). The acquisition makes Sun TV the only Indian media house to own cricket franchises across India, South Africa, and the UK. The board of Sun TV approved the deal in a meeting on July 18, 2025. Once completed, Northern Superchargers Ltd will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sun TV Network. The franchise, currently owned 51% by Yorkshire County Cricket Club and 49% by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), will now transfer entirely into Sun TV’s hands. The transaction is expected to be fully executed by December 31, 2025. This acquisition is part of ECB’s ongoing plan to privatize teams in The Hundred. Northern Superchargers becomes one of the early teams to be completely owned by a private entity. The addition of a UK-based franchise marks its intent to become a global player in cricket franchise ownership and sports content. The company said in a filing to the National Stock Exchange (NSE): “We are enhancing our global presence in sports and investing into a club that is part of The Hundred.” In FY24, Northern Superchargers had a turnover of £1.89 million and has been described as a profitable entity. Despite modest financials, the valuation of the club at nearly 53 times revenue signals the strategic importance of the deal, especially in content, sponsorships, and long-term broadcasting opportunities. Post-announcement, Sun TV shares rose by 2.6%, closing at ₹590.5 on July 21. Analysts predict long-term branding and revenue synergies as The Hundred grows in international popularity. The Hundred was launched by the ECB in 2021 as a fast-paced 100-ball format aimed at drawing younger audiences. With rising global viewership, especially through digital platforms, it presents a timely expansion for Sun TV.
