Reports suggest that Rohit Sharma’s future as India’s captain is uncertain, with a crucial decision expected after the ICC Champions Trophy. According to sources, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is waiting for the tournament’s outcome before finalizing leadership plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship cycle. Rohit, who has been a vital figure in Indian cricket, still believes he has more to offer. However, the BCCI wants a clear roadmap. Reports indicate that chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir have already had discussions with Rohit regarding his future. The veteran batter has been asked to communicate his long-term plans, including his thoughts on continuing as captain. While retirement remains his personal decision, the board is likely to revisit the leadership structure if he decides to step away. A source close to BCCI has informed Times of India, "Rohit still believes there is some cricket left in him. He has been told to communicate his plans going forward. Retiring is his call but there will be another discussion around continuing with captaincy." Interestingly, Virat Kohli’s name has also come up in discussions, but there is reportedly no immediate concern regarding his place in the team. However, with both Rohit and Kohli stepping away from T20Is, the BCCI is focused on finding a stable leader to guide the team through major tournaments. Traditionally, contracts are finalized before the IPL, but this time, the board has opted to wait until after the Champions Trophy to make key decisions. The assessment of Grade A+ players, including Rohit, Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja, is under review. A challenging Test season for some of these players has raised questions about contract renewals. Meanwhile, names like Axar Patel, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant are being considered for promotions. Shreyas Iyer, who was left out last year due to disciplinary concerns, might also make a comeback. If Rohit decides to step down, the selectors will have to weigh their options carefully. With Shubman Gill still inexperienced as a leader and Bumrah’s fitness being a concern, the board may need more time to decide on the next captain.
