Australia will be gearing up for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka from 29th January 2025. The team will head to Pakistan afterwards for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. With less than two weeks in hand for the series, concerns were there for the participation of star batter and interim captain Steven Smith. There is good news for the team as Smith gets cleared to play in the series. Cricket Australia (CA) issued this statement on Monday, January 20. The board reported that Smith was examined by a specialist surgeon with a view to the medical check-up regarding the injury he suffered on his right elbow while playing for Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL) match against Sydney Thunder. Cricket Australia mentioned: “Steve Smith has undergone a specialist medical review today following his right elbow injury sustained during the Big Bash League. He has been cleared to rejoin the Test squad and travel to Dubai. Smith is expected to return to batting later in the week to begin his preparation for the first Test against Sri Lanka.” They further added: "Smith is expected to return to batting later in the week to begin his preparation for the first Test against Sri Lanka." Smith is in the fourth position for the run-scorers in Australia in Test cricket after the great cricketers Ricky Ponting, Allan Border, and Steve Waugh. Smith was also the second-highest run-getter in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in which he produced two centuries with a score of 314 runs and an average of 34.88. Since Pat Cummins is missing the series against Sri Lanka to balance his workload, there is a possibility that Smith can reach 10,000 Test runs while captaining the team. Update on Matthew Kuhnemann's fitness Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann is still unavailable for the Test series. Though he will join the team to Sri Lanka, his participation in the XI is uncertain. Kuhnemann also injured his right thumb of his non-bowling hand. They are still waiting for information about the extent of injury before taking any selection decision.
