Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando have been fined 25% of their match fees following an incident during the opening day of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday. Both players have also received one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct. The disciplinary action followed an exchange between the India batter and Sri Lanka fast bowler after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal with the final delivery of the 17th over. The ICC classified the episode as “a confrontation” and found both players responsible for inappropriate physical contact. The offence falls under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support personnel. Neither player had committed a similar offence resulting in a demerit point during the previous 24 months. ICC Details The Incident The ICC explained the sequence of events in its statement following the incident. “Jaiswal walked towards Fernando and the two exchanged words, following which Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal,” the statement described. “In response, Jaiswal leant in, resulting in their heads making contact.” The offence is classified as a Level 1 breach of the code. Such violations can attract an official reprimand as the minimum punishment, while the maximum penalty is a fine of 50% of the player's match fee. Players can also receive one or two demerit points for Level 1 offences. The punishment therefore keeps both players within the prescribed range for the offence. Their respective disciplinary records will now carry one additional point following Sunday's proceedings. He was the second Indian batter to depart after India, having won the toss and chosen to bat, reached 66 runs. Fernando continued to play a significant role with the ball later in the day. The fast bowler also dismissed India captain Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja as Sri Lanka kept taking wickets at regular intervals. India eventually closed the opening day at 300 for 5, leaving the visitors with a strong platform in the second Test. The series began with India securing a 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in Galle. India consequently entered the Colombo Test with a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The disciplinary incident did not prevent either Jaiswal or Fernando from continuing their participation in the Test after the first-day confrontation.
