Sri Lanka suffered a massive blow when their star opening batsman, Pathum Nissanka, was ruled out of the ODI series against the West Indies due to a quadriceps strain. In Pathun Nissanka’s absence, the newcomer Nishan Madushka is all set to make his debut for his team. The right-handed batter, who had been dealing with a quadriceps strain that he got against West Indies in the T20I series, has now worsened the injury ahead of the first ODI. In his place, 25-year-old Nishan Madushka is set to make his debut. Madushka, a right-handed wicketkeeper-batter, has already represented Sri Lanka in 10 Test matches. Nissanka’s absence will be a significant blow for Sri Lanka, as he’s been in excellent form, providing much-needed stability and consistency to the team. Notably, he has a double century to his name at Pallekele, and with him out, the onus will now fall on the senior batters to step up and shoulder more responsibility.
