The Cricket Association of Nepal promoted the spirit of cricket after they formally wrote to Cricket Bhutan after their female cricketer timed out a Bhutanese batter during a game in the ACC Women's T20 Premier Cup. In the Thursday game between Nepal and Bhutan in Malaysia's Kolej Tuanku Ja'Afar ground, Bhutanese batter Ritshi Choden was timed out for being late. Despite being allowed legally, this move did not sit well with the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). They formally wrote to Bhutan Cricket, citing the matter; they apologized to the board, saying that the spirit of the game is more important than the existing laws. In the statement issued, CAN wrote, "The incident involving the timed-out dismissal of a Bhutanese batter during today’s match does not reflect the values and spirit of cricket that the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) strives to uphold. On behalf of the Cricket Association of Nepal, we extend our sincere apologies for the actions of our Women’s National Team in this matter. While the dismissal was effected within the Laws of Cricket, we recognize that the spirit of the game extends beyond the written laws and must remain central to our conduct at all times." It added, "As a developing cricketing nation, we place the utmost importance on sportsmanship, mutual respect, and fair play. We acknowledge that this incident has fallen short of those standards and regret any disappointment it may have caused. We convey our sincere apologies to Bhutan Cricket, the player concerned, and all relevant stakeholders. CAN remains firmly committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and the spirit of cricket, both on and off the field." What happened to Ritshi Choden? This is the third time that a batter has been timed out in international cricket and the first time in women's international cricket. During the match between Bhutan and Nepal, Nepal's number 3 batter Ritshi Choden did not appear on time within three minutes. As per MCC "Laws of Cricket" 40.1.1, "After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out." Bhutan players rightly appealed for the wicket, and the umpires granted it. Earlier, in the 2023 Cricket World Cup, Sri Lanka Angelo Matthews was infamously timed out by Bangladesh at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium. Earlier, Ghana's Godfred Bakiweyem was dismissed against Sierra Leone in a T20I game in 2023. In Women's cricket, the first instance happened in a T20 game between Sussex Women and Bucks Women in 2025 as Anna lewis suffered the same.
