Cheteshwar Pujara has expressed his concern for the Indian bowling line-up after veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket. Ashwin called off from his national duties right after the Gabba Test was declared a draw. Rohit Sharma, the Indian Test team captain, told that he had urged Ashwin to stay till the Melbourne Test, but the later departed on December 19. After Ashwin's departure, it was obvious that Ravindra Jadeja will have the sole responsibility in the spin department. Cheteshwar Pujara, the representative of middle-order resilience, has been handed the commentary responsibilities in this BGT series. A critic in the off-days commented on India's void after Ashwin's departure. Cheteshwar Pujara expressed concern over India's bowling strength after Ashwin's retirement, highlighting weaknesses in the supporting seamers and questioning the team combination for the Melbourne Test. In an interview with Star Sports, Pujara said, "My biggest question and the reason for a little bit of concern is that the Indian bowling is looking a little weak. Batting is a little better, like the top five didn't do well, but the middle order and lower middle order, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitesh, and even tail enders, Bumrah and Akashdeep contributed with the bat. Now, there is a weakness in the bowling, so what will you feed the team? That is the biggest question, because you can't drop Nitish, you can't drop Jadeja, so what will be the team combination? Ashwin has taken retirement, so two spinners, I don't think they will play in Melbourne. So, how will you strengthen the bowling? Because the three seamers are very good, but their supporting role, fourth and fifth seamer, Nitesh Kumar is the fourth seamer and Ravindra Jadeja is the fifth bowler. If you add both of them together, the bowling is not that good. We will have to think about that, because if you want to win a test match, then you have to take 20 wickets, and the ability to take 20 wickets is not that good." India’s spin options, including all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, are under scrutiny ahead of crucial matches. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Jadeja are expected to take on more responsibility. However, critics figured out that Jasprit Bumrah has been the sole hope in the bowling line-up, lacking support from the rest of the unit. India's bowling combinations have varied throughout the series, with Sundar and Bumrah leading in Perth, Ashwin struggling in Adelaide, and Jadeja and Akash Deep replacing Ashwin and Rana in Brisbane. Despite limited success with the ball, their little bit of batting contribution helped the team secure a draw. As India heads into the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne, known for its seam-friendly conditions, captain Rohit Sharma faces a tough choice: stick with the current players or experiment with a new combination to strengthen the attack. The decision could be pivotal in India’s World Test Championship race.
