Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly did not like the idea of Shreyas Iyer being dropped from the Indian team touring England. With the form he has been in since the 2023 World Cup, it looks too vague to drop a player like him. However, Ganguly still feels that Test cricket is a different format, but Iyer could have been tried in it. Speaking to RevSports, Ganguly said, "He has been playing at his best in the last one year, and should have been in this team. Last one year has been fantastic for him. He isn’t the player who got left out. He is now scoring under pressure, taking responsibility, playing the short ball well. Although Test cricket’s different, I would have had him in this series to see what he can do." Notably, Ganguly has worked with Iyer while he was the Director of cricket for Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils). So, he has a good look at Iyer. Iyer started his IPL journey with Delhi Daredevils in 2015, when he won the Emerging Player Award. He got his captaincy in 2017, when Gautam Gambhir stepped down from the role. Since then, he led the team till 2020, when he led them to their first-ever final. Unfortunately, he suffered from a shoulder dislocation during a match against England and came back in the second half of the IPL; however, he was denied captaincy. He then came to KKR, and won the trophy in 2024. However, Iyer ended as the runner-up representing Punjab Kings in 2025, despite boasting 604 runs this tournament. Putting IPL aside, 2025 has been tremendous for him. Winning almost all the domestic tournaments, he was the second-highest scorer in the home ODI series against England, and ended the 2025 Champions trophy as the second-highest run-getter of the tournament (243 runs), right after New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra. Even that BGT season had no Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma missed the Melbourne Test. Ganguly said, "Yes, sure. We just need two things, batting well and [Jasprit] Bumrah remaining fit. We won in Australia, in Melbourne (2020-21), with a young batting line-up, having no [Virat] Kohli, no Rohit Sharma. So, I do not see why we cannot win.” India will play their first Test in the series at Headingley, Leeds, on June 20.
