India head coach Gautam Gambhir just added one more massive success to his coaching resume. The 2026 T20 World Cup champions was guided by Gambhir making it consecutive T20 World Cup titles after their victory in 2024. With this victory, Gambhir is also the first ever Indian coach to win 2 ICC trophies after he earlier helped India lift the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly, believes that the real test for the Indian head coach is yet to arrive. Ganguly stated that the real test of the Indian head coach will come in the form of the 2027 ODI World Cup which will be held in South Africa. The Indian side faced a few hurdles at the start of the T20 World Cup 2026 tournament however, they peaked at the right time and managed to lift the trophy for the second time in succession. The team displayed some dominant performances in the knockout stages of the T20 World Cup 2026. Sourav Ganguly on Gautam Gambhir's Next Big Challenge Speaking in an interview with Boria Majumdar for Money Control, Ganguly said the conditions in South Africa would test the mettle of the Indian head coach and his squad. Ganguly said: "His real test in white ball is going to be in South Africa in 2027. Conditions there will test him but I am confident he will get it right with the team he has." India were a few inches away from winning the 2023 ODI World Cup where they reached the finals after not losing a single game in the tournament however, they were outclassed by Australia in the finals ending their hopes of lifting the trophy in their backyard. Now, the focus will slowly shift toward the 2027 ODI World Cup. This will also be the last opportunity for veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to win another ODI World Cup for India. The former BCCI president said the team needs to improve their performance in the longer format of the game. Ganguly added: "In red ball, he needs to get better. And the way to do it is to think less about the wicket. He needs to get the wicket out of his system. Take the England series. He couldn't do anything about the wicket and you can see the results. He doesn't need to play on turners at home. Good wickets will produce good results." Despite sharing his views, Ganguly made it clear that he feels Gautam Gambhir is doing a decent job as the head coach of the Indian team. Ganguly said: "Gautam is a very good coach. If you remember I said on your platform ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy that you need to give the man some time. As white ball coach he is very good especially in these conditions. He has a very good team and is a very good coach." Now all eyes will be on the IPL 2026 season with Gambhir looking to extend his success in the IPL. Once the tournament is done, the head coach of India will shift his focus to the upcoming Test and ODI series with a focus toward the 2027 World Cup.
