India head coach Gautam Gambhir has had little banter with Ricky Ponting, who lately had questions for Virat Kohli. The former Australia cricketer thought the Indian cricketer wasn't doing too well in Test cricket and reminded everyone that Kohli had scored only two centuries in red-ball cricket in the last five years. Gambhir took umbrage at his comments, and before flying Down Under, the 43-year-old asked Ponting to concentrate on Australian cricket instead. Gambhir's remarks did not entertain some former cricketers, including Adam Gilchrist. However, he found support in Sourav Ganguly, who argued that the former cricketer did nothing wrong. Again, he stood for Gambhir after the 3-0 defeat at the hands of New Zealand. The former cricketer said, "Gambhir is a newly appointed person; he needs time." I saw some criticism on what he said in the press conference. It is the way he is. Let him be. When he won the IPL, he was the same, you were going gaga over him. Just because he has lost three test matches and a one-day series against Sri Lanka, the straight talk has not been looked at nicely. But that is the way he is,” Ganguly also reminded that Australian cricketers have always been tough on opponents, and he supported Gambhir for the statements he made. “And why not? Australians, from the time I have watched cricket, they have been tough for you. They have played their cricket that way, whether it was (Steve) Waugh, Ponting or (Matthew) Hayden. So, there is nothing wrong with what Gambhir has said. That is the way he is, and he fights, he competes, so let us give him a chance. It has just been two-three months, and you are passing a judgement on him,” he added.
