The former Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly, has backed Abhimanyu Easwaran to have the potential to become India's number 3 in the long run. India, as seen during the England series, has been juggling with the spot, giving chances to Karun Nair and Sai Sudarshan. Even though Nair looks like a misfit to many, Sai Su seemed to impress the critics with his techniques, if not his runs. Pointing out India's vulnerability at that spot, Ganguly felt that Easwaran might fill the space, and he would get the call. Speaking to the Times of India, Ganguly said, “He has age on his side. I still believe he will get his chance. I feel batters like Yashasvi, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, have all got runs. It's only the No.3 slot that looked a bit fragile. Maybe Easwaran will be tried there." Despite impressive first-class statistics and experience leading India ‘A’, Easwaran has often been overlooked during squad selections, even when the Indian Test team has undergone transitions. He was included in recent tours to Australia and England but did not get a chance to play. In the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with key players unavailable, the No.3 batting spot was filled by KL Rahul rather than Easwaran. Meanwhile, the team experimented with Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair at No.3, both struggling to secure the position. Easwaran’s father recently revealed that head coach Gautam Gambhir assured him of a fair opportunity when the time comes. With 7,841 runs in 103 first-class matches at an average near 49, Easwaran will lead East Zone in the 2025 Duleep Trophy. Strong performances in the upcoming home Tests against West Indies and South Africa could finally earn him his India cap.
