Ollie Davies will team up with his brother Joel at the Sydney Sixers in the BBL next season following his departure from the Sydney Thunder, who are about to hand in an end-of-season review to Cricket New South Wales after finishing last. Davies, 25, has been freed to sign with the Sixers on a three-year contract in the current player movement period, after only playing in one game for the Thunder last season. Davies released a statement, saying: "I'm so excited to sign with the Sydney Sixers for the next three years. It's a childhood dream to play professional cricket alongside my little brother Joel. We're both stoked to pull on the magenta together and run out at the SCG. I hope I can make meaningful contributions as we fight to bring home a championship for our fans." Davies's History of Playing Davies initially made his presence felt in the Thunder side during the 2022-23 season, when he scored three half-centuries to take the team to the finals. But since then, his performance has not been consistent. In the last season, he played nine matches, including the final against the Hobart Hurricanes, but in the 2025-26 season, he lost his place in the side and played only one match, as the Thunder struggled to find batting options apart from David Warner’s phenomenal performance. Coaches being Resolved This is coming as Cricket New South Wales is set to review the Thunder’s season, which has only recorded two wins, this week. The CEO of the organization, Lee Germon, has confirmed that the future of the team and coach Trevor Bayliss would be considered, but nothing has been decided yet. Germon gave a statement to ESPNCricinfo on Saturday, saying: "We're in the process of formulating some decisions in terms of the Thunder moving forward. I have a meeting this week where I'm going to be privy to the review, so I'm not in a position to make any comment." Bayliss has been the Thunder coach for five years, taking them to three finals, including a BBL final in 2024-25. However, last season’s last-placed result was the second time the Thunder have finished at the bottom of the league under Bayliss’ tenure, after finishing eighth in 2023-24. Also Read | Why the 1981 Underarm Scandal Remains Cricket's Darkest Truth The Thunder’s review comes after Cricket NSW CEO Lee Germon decided to part ways with long-serving Sydney Sixers coach Greg Shipperd, who has a year left on his contract. This decision came after the Sixers made their third final in five years. Although the Sixers have not finished lower than third in the last seven years, they have not won a championship since 2020-21. Cricket NSW also revealed that the 2025-26 season would be Shipperd’s last season coaching the Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup sides, despite NSW still having a chance to win both competitions and having four and three games left in the respective seasons. Shipperd was originally set to coach NSW until the end of the 2026-27 season. The Sixers have not yet renewed the contract of long-time captain Moises Henriques or veteran batter Daniel Hughes, who are both eligible to become free agents. Off-spinner Todd Murphy is also expected to depart as a free agent after losing his place in the Sixers’ playing XI in the middle of the season due to his selection into the Test squad of Australia. Australia’s experienced white-ball leg-spinner Adam Zampa could be a possible free-agent recruit for the Sixers after he decided not to re-sign with the Melbourne Renegades.
