A cryptic comment from former New Zealand quick Simon Doull after New Zealand's Test defeat to England at Lord's has again raised doubts about Kane Williamson's future. The Black Caps suffered a heavy 115-run defeat to England in the first Test match at the home of cricket, however, the conversation quickly moved away from the result, with Doull suggesting a significant announcement may be on its way. Speaking on Sky Sports with Ian Ward and Stuart Broad, Doull alluded that a development may be on the way. "I have got a feeling; something is coming at some stage today or tomorrow. An announcement." The former New Zealand bowler's comment was met with widespread speculation among fans, who have been quick to link it to Kane Williamson, after it was revealed by the New Zealand skipper earlier on the same day that this would be his last appearance at Lord's. Pressed for more details by Ward, the former Kiwi paceman played his cards close to his chest. "Can't say it, can't say any more." Ward responded with the jovial outburst: "What is the point of having you here, if you can't say anything?" Doull then elaborated on his thoughts by: "I just think there may be something coming at us, in the next day or two, as far as an announcement, as far as what they might do." Stuart Broad then chimed in with a light-hearted quip; "A JCB to dig it up?" The exchange immediately generated widespread discussion among cricket followers across social media as the world wondered what could possibly lie ahead for the captain. The veteran batsman managed to score just 18 runs across his two innings as England put on a resounding performance. New Zealand were set a target of 254 to chase at the start of their second innings and they faltered from start to finish. The tourists finished day two on 36 for 3 and failed to make much progress after the third day's play was curtailed by rain. The bowlers for England remained in complete control of the game and were eventually able to bowl out New Zealand to seal victory by 115 runs, Gus Atkinson bagging five wickets. A Legendary Test Career Could be Nearing its End Should Williamson decide to end his Test career, he would end it as the finest of Test players that New Zealand have produced. So far, in his 35 years the batsman has accrued 9,515 runs in Test matches along with 33 centuries and 38 half-centuries. His average with the bat is still a spectacular 54, and he is New Zealand's highest run scorer in Test cricket by a considerable margin. If he does decide to retire, it will mean that Williamson ends his Test career just short of the 10,000 run mark that is yet to be achieved by any New Zealand Test batsman. There has been no official announcement made regarding Williamson's potential retirement nor any comment from New Zealand Cricket as yet, but with comments such as those from Doull, the spotlight will firmly remain on the former captain to see if he will opt for the retirement that many may believe is imminent.
