Indian captain Shubman Gill, who picked up a neck injury on the third day of the first Test against South Africa, was discharged from the Kolkata hospital on Sunday. Gill has joined his teammates back in the team hotel, with early medical updates suggesting that he is stable and recovering well. The right-handed opener is able to walk and move his neck, with the pain he felt on Saturday evening having reduced. Gill will remain in close observation at the hotel. He will be routinely monitored by the doctors along with the BCCI medical staff over the next few days. A decision on his travel to Guwahati for the second Test is yet to be taken. A decision on his playing chances depends on how fast he improves with rest and treatment. How the Injury Happened The injury occurred late on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test. Gill walked in after the drinks break and defended his first ball from Simon Harmer. On the next ball, he played a strong slog sweep for four runs. But the power of the shot caused a sudden jerk in his neck. Gill immediately clutched the back of his neck and looked in serious pain. He struggled to move his head and retired hurt after only three balls. He was subsequently transported to the hospital in a cervical collar as a precautionary measure. Former India captain and CAB president Sourav Ganguly also visited him in the hospital for a short time on Sunday. Ganguly spoke to Gill and the medical team and said that the young captain was in good spirits. Also Read | Who Is to Blame for India’s Kolkata Defeat?
