The Indian Test captain had reportedly sustained a nerve injury due to which he could not play the first Test at Eden Gardens and has been ruled out of the second at Guwahati against South Africa. He was admitted to the Woodlands hospital's Intensive Care Unit but was released the next day. As per reports, he flew to Mumbai from Guwahati, where he has been given an injection to ease his symptoms. For him, the remainder of 2025 looks impossible to play. As per reports, he was already suffering from neck pain, which the bowling coach Morne Morkel said in the press conference was a result of "bad sleep." However, things worsened when he tried to sweep on the fourth ball of his innings and was retired hurt. He was carried in a stretcher to the hospital. As per reports, he was wearing a neck collar. However, he wasn't wearing one when he reached Guwahati. After being ruled out from the second Test, Gill flew to Bombay, where he met spinal injury specialist Dr. Abhay Nene. The Times of India figured out that Gill has had a nerve injury, while a BCCI source informed PTI that he has given an injection to "alleviate his symptoms." Gill even has restrictions for rehab, as he has been advised to take some rest. This means he can miss the remainder of the South Africa clash, including the ODI series and the T20I series that follows. The source said, as quoted by PTI, "Gill has been given an injection to alleviate his symptoms and will need a period of rest before starting rehab, training and skill work. There is every chance he could also be doubtful for the T20I series." The ODI series against South Africa will start on Novemeber 30 while the five-match T20I series will commence on December 9.
