Virat Kohli was born to play white-ball cricket. In spite of his success in Test cricket, it was the shorter versions of the game that he dominated the most. ODIs have been his most favorite format by far, but Kohli has also worked out T20 cricket. It was no coincidence that he was the recipient of 'Player of the Tournament' awards in consecutive T20 World Cups. Kohli possesses the best average among any player with more than 1900 runs in T20Is. He simply understood how to prepare the game in the first innings, and chasing was as natural to him as swimming to a fish. But Kohli has retired from the shortest form. India does not have their 'Mr. Dependable' anymore. Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta believes there’s no reason to worry, as Shubman Gill can seamlessly step into Virat Kohli’s role of anchoring the innings. Despite being out of T20Is for more than a year, the 25-year-old has now been named India’s vice-captain for the Asia Cup 2025. The 25 years old played the same role for GT for the past three years in the Indian Premier League (IPL). One could even assert he's far more explosive than Kohli after he gets set and as safe later on as well during the initial half of the innings. Because what Virat did over the years successfully and brilliantly, you also need guys like that who can bat through an innings, build and anchor an innings. For me, Shubman is the perfect candidate after Virat’s retirement who can do that job,” Gill's pick surprised some, particularly given Yashaswi Jaiswal wasn't picked. Dasgupta has justified his spot in India's 15-member team for the Asia Cup. Both have almost the same strike rate, but Gill had a superior average. “He’s got 600-plus runs in the IPL. He’s got good numbers in the T20 format. It’s not that you’re picking some random person. I think it’s really unfair to say things like that. This cannot be a reason for sure,” he added.
