India Test skipper Shubman Gill will almost certainly miss the upcoming Duleep Trophy, which starts on August 28 at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Gill, who was appointed captain of the North Zone team, is indisposed and resting at home in Chandigarh. The North Zone selection panel had expected his non-availability for the inter-zonal match over the last few days. Sources say physios checked on Gill recently and had submitted a report on his health to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) some 24 hours ago. Official word on his withdrawal, however, has not been received by the zonal associations till August 22. Gill was not going to participate in the whole tournament in any case, as he will be leaving for national duty in the Asia Cup from September 9 in the UAE. The Duleep Trophy is between August 28 and September 15, and Gill would have played only in North Zone's first match against East Zone in the quarterfinal. Earlier this month, Gill returned from a successful England tour, where he scored 754 runs in five Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, earning him a spot as vice-captain in India’s Asia Cup T20 squad. Fast bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, who are both with the Asia Cup team, will depart after the first match. They will be replaced by Gurnoor Brar and Anuj Thakral if North Zone makes it. North Zone selection committee has Chetan Sharma (Haryana), Nikhil Chopra (Delhi), Amit Uniyal (Chandigarh), Mithun Minhas (J&K, convenor), Raj Kumar (Services), and Mukesh Kumar (Himachal Pradesh). In the meantime, BCCI was not happy that there was no major player from the Duleep Trophy. BCCI general manager Kuruvilla sent letters to the state associations, requesting all the India players available be included. "To uphold its prestige and ensure the highest quality of competition, it’s imperative that all currently available India players are selected for their respective zonal teams," the letter stated.
