Shubman Gill's ODI captaincy debut was not as per expectation. The young Indian skipper had a challenging first One Day International as a skipper, with India losing to Australia by seven wickets in a rain-affected game at Optus Stadium, Perth, on Sunday (October 19). After India was asked to bat first, they scored just 136 runs at the loss of nine wickets in 26 overs. Australia easily chased the DLS target of 131, wrapping up the match with ease. The defeat put Gill in a dubious category along with Indian legend Virat Kohli. Gill's Unwanted Captaincy Record With this outcome, Shubman Gill became just the second Indian cricketer following Virat Kohli to lose his maiden match as captain in all three formats, Test, ODI, and T20I. Gill’s first match as captain in T20Is came against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club on July 6, 2024, where India suffered a 13-run defeat. His Test captaincy debut was also disappointing, as India went down by five wickets against England at Headingley, Leeds, in June 2025. Now, with the ODI defeat in Perth, Gill has joined Kohli in this rare and unwanted record. MS Dhoni, too, had success early in his career as a captain, winning his first Test and T20I as captain, although his inaugural ODI as captain ended in a draw. Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, lost his first ODI as captain but won his first Test and T20I. Ajinkya Rahane is the sole other Indian captain besides Sehwag to have won his inaugural matches in all three formats. He captained India to victory over Zimbabwe in his ODI and T20I captaincy debuts in 2015 and took the team to an eight-wicket victory against Australia in his first Test as captain in 2017.
