India is scheduled to get back to T20 International cricket in the Asia Cup 2025 last having played the format in February against England. The announcement of the squad came with a huge surprise as Shubman Gill, who was out of T20I cricket for more than a year, got his comeback. Not just that, but Gill has also been appointed vice-captain, so his place in the playing XI is virtually guaranteed. Former India cricketer and Gill's former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) teammate Robin Uthappa questioned this decision. According to him, Gill's pick is not just about cricketing abilities but also involves greater plans for Indian cricket. Uthappa's Take on Gill's Selection Speaking in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel, Uthappa said: "They have caused an issue for themselves by bringing Shubman into this whole process of including him in T20 cricket. But I also think from an Indian cricket perspective, at all kinds of eras, you have always had superstars and they have backed a particular player for the sake of Indian cricket, and I think that narrative is continued to be followed right now." He said: "I think the marketing and business narrative also takes precedence, and I think that is also a part, which is why he is also brought in. You want certain superstars to take the game forward. Shubman is going to be one of them." The announcement has been controversial among supporters and cricket analysts. Gill is arguably the most promising young cricketer in world cricket. His T20I record has, however, been questioned, and most were surprised to come back and find him also being given a leadership spot. India will begin their Asia Cup campaign with great hope, and everyone will look towards Gill to determine if he is able to live up to this trust. Being vice-captain will also put more pressure on him as he looks to establish himself in T20 cricket.
