Shubman Gill is set to lead India in the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens on November 14, and the 26-year-old batter has a unique milestone in sight. Since making his Test captaincy debut against England in Leeds on June 20, 2025, Gill has amassed 946 runs in 13 innings across seven Tests. A score of at least 54 in the Kolkata opener would see him surpass Sunil Gavaskar as the fastest Indian captain to reach 1,000 Test runs in terms of innings. Gavaskar had achieved the mark in 15 innings during his captaincy tenure. Gill’s form has been formidable this year, with four centuries in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy and one against the West Indies in Delhi on October 11. If he converts one of these innings into a century in Kolkata, he will also equal or surpass Virat Kohli’s record of most Test centuries by an Indian captain in a calendar year. Kohli had five centuries in 10 Tests in 2017, while Gill already has five centuries in seven Tests in 2025. A first-innings score of 161 or more will make him the first Indian and second Asian batter after Babar Azam to cross 3,000 WTC runs. To date, Gill has 2,839 runs in 39 WTC matches over 72 innings, making him India’s leading run-scorer in the tournament. In terms of Test centuries in a calendar year, Gill could equal Sachin Tendulkar’s 2010 record of seven centuries if he scores two in the South Africa series. Tendulkar had achieved the feat in 14 Tests, while Gill has five centuries in eight matches this year. Gill already holds India’s record for the most centuries in WTC and remains the only Indian batter with double-digit centuries in the competition. The Eden Gardens Test will therefore not only mark the start of a crucial series for India but also provide Gill with an opportunity to reinforce his standing among the country’s elite batting leaders. His performance could redefine captaincy milestones while consolidating India’s WTC dominance.
