Indian captain Shubman Gill reached another landmark in his growing Test career while playing in the one-off Test against Afghanistan at New Chandigarh. The right-handed batter scored his 1000th run as a Test captain and became just the 11th Indian captain to do so. Gill reached this mark in his innings against Afghanistan while crossing his 9th Test half-century. He achieved the landmark in his 15th innings as a Test captain and became the second fastest Indian captain to score 1000 runs. Only Sunil Gavaskar is ahead of Gill, as he achieved the feat in 14 innings. The Indian captain also equalled former Australian captain Steve Smith's achievement who scored 1000 Test runs as captain in 15 innings. Gill now shares the fifth position on the list of fastest captains to 1000 Test runs in Test cricket. The right-hand batter notched up 732 runs in 16 matches with a batting average of 45.75 and strike rate of 163.02. The right-hander finished the season with one century and six fifties and scored a total of 104 as his highest score in an innings. The top order solidity of Gujarat Titans, thanks to his runs saw them progress in to finals and establish himself as one of the most impactful batters in the IPL 2026 season. The momentum of this fruitful IPL has been carried in to Test cricket for him too as his performance in the ongoing match against Afghanistan shows us he anchored the inning while leading from the front as captain of the side.
